What Happens to Used CDs and Vinyl Records in France

When our discs go up in smoke… and why I refuse to accept this fate

A little‑known reality: the incineration of musical media

In France, used CDs and vinyl records have no real recycling system accessible to the general public. In most cases, these cultural objects are simply sent to incineration.

CDs are made of polycarbonate and aluminum. Vinyl records are made of PVC.

These complex materials make recycling costly and poorly developed. As a result, tons of musical media are burned every year.

Why are CDs and vinyl records difficult to recycle?

Recycling CDs and DVDs requires separating multiple layers of plastic and metal. For vinyl records, the presence of PVC makes the process even more complicated.

Unlike paper or glass, these materials do not have an obvious sorting or recycling channel for individuals.

In an era of circular economy, these cultural objects remain excluded from traditional recovery systems.

Incineration: an invisible ending

Incineration does produce energy, but it also destroys the material forever.

Beyond the environmental impact, there is something symbolic here too: objects that once carried music, memories and collective history become anonymous waste.

Re‑use: an immediate and sustainable alternative

Before recycling, there is a more direct solution: re‑use.

Re‑using a CD or a vinyl record prevents it from becoming waste. It extends its life without heavy industrial transformation.

Re‑use fits perfectly within an ecological and responsible approach.

Transforming discs destined for incineration into living artworks

This is the foundation of my artistic work.

I collect CDs, CD‑Rs, DVDs and vinyl records that were meant to be thrown away. I clean them, prepare them, and transform them into hand‑painted creations.

Each disc becomes:

• A unique artwork

• A circular artistic object

• A symbol of second life

• An alternative to incineration

This is more than upcycled art. It is a concrete way to divert a cultural object from destruction.

What if we changed the way we look at cultural waste?

Re‑use is an ecological act. Creating from objects destined for incineration is an artistic act.
